The only thing that is different is that you may be asked to speak for slightly longer or shorter in your debates. Everything else remains the same. The only thing about World Schools that is very different from what you might have seen before is something called Points of Information (or POIs for the real dorks). Points of information are a rule that lets you interrupt someone elses speech to challenge them on what they are saying and means that the whole debate becomes a lot more fun to be in. Once you finish your speech, you can still be involved in what is going on, and score for your team just by making sure that you challenge the other team on their arguments. But dont worry about points of information now. We will take a look at them later. In the meanwhile, World Schools style is very similar to normal deba ting with all its basic rules, with just a few little changes. The Basic Rules of World Schools Style  Teams  In World Schools, there are two teams just like most forms of debating you will have seen before. The one team is the PROPOSITION, and it is there job to agree with the topic, and argue for it. The other team is the OPPOSITION, and it will be their job to disagree with the proposition.  Each team will have three speakers in it, and they will each have a chance to speak once during the debate, to state their case, as well as being able to offer points of information to the other teams speakers when they are speaking. They can do that throughout the debate. Speeches  Once the third speakers from each side have finished speaking, one speaker from each team will have to give a short reply speech, which will let them summarise what has gone on in the debate, and close their teams arguments. The person who gets to do this cant be the third speaker from the team. This is because they will have just finished their speech, and so they wont have time to write another one and come up to speak again. That means that either the first speaker or the second speaker will have to do the reply speech. The speeches are all done in a specific order, which is very similar to any style of debating that you might have seen before. There is one little difference though. The reply speeches happen the other way round from how it normally works. The Opposition third speaker will finish tehir speech, and then the someone from that team will have to get up straight afterwards to give the reply speech. That means that the Opposition team gets to speak twice in a row. After the reply speech, it will be the Propositions chance to do their reply speech, and then the debate will end.

The novel reveals the horrors of war through the character of Robert Ross and his relationships with his family, his friends and people he came across in his life. The film adaptation of the novel however lacks in detail as if fails to portray Roberts character, especially through his relation ship with his father whom he considered as a mentor and a role model. The film also missed out the important scenes that show Roberts emotional pain and his distress over the inhumanity of war. The novel reveals the life of Robert Ross through his relationships. The novel from the beginning shows a strong father -son bond between Robert and his father Thomas Ross. The film how ever fails to show any such bond. The novel reveals that Robert always looked up to his father and considered his as a mentor and a role model. The movie dose not show such strong relationship as it dose not have scenes which portray the father and son relationship and described in the novel. Findely shows from the very beginning of the story, demonstrates the strong father-son bond between Robert and his father, Tom. Robert loved and respected his father very much, His father got him through it.(16). However in the movie there is no such reference of this kind. Moreover the film dose not show how much robbers missed his father during the war and when his father shows up in Montreal to pass from hand to hand a revolver and a hamper of food to him , .the sight of his father had lifted his spirits immeasurably(69). The film adaptation of the novel did a very poor job in showing a proper Roberts relationship with is father because of which we never saw an important side of Roberts character. The film also failed to portray a concrete image of Robert in his state of emotional distress and pain. The movie for example did not show how Roberts isolated his self during his training in Alberta. The novel reveals that after his sisters death Robert shunned all kinds of attachments and kept to himself, this is very effectively shown during his training at lethbridge, Alberta he wanted no attachments (28). The movie dose not contains any such scene or any reference to his seclusion, thus leaving out an important part of the novel as it showed how to what extent Rowenas death affected him and how he was dealing with his loss. Also, this is the part of the book where Robert is away from home, alone for the first time and this is directly after Rowenas death. Thus, it helped the reader observe Robertss pain and suffering, the exclusion of this part of the book made it hard for the viewer to see how Robert dealt with his sisters death and how much guilt he had for not keeping his promise with Rowena. The movie as compared to the book seemed to miss out the very essence of the novel. The novel did an excellent job in showing Roberts pain and his reason for joining the army. While in the movie lacks in the detail and expression. The movie did not show Roberts meeting with Eugene Taffler when he was at training. This was also an important part as here Robert meets a man he considers as his role model and begins to admire. This shows that Roberts guilt had full control over him and he was more then willing to leave everything behind and kill hed found the model he could emulate-a man to whom killing wasnt killing at all but only throwing .(35). the exclusion of this scene thus makes it hard for the viewer to see Roberts character and his moti ves for joining the army. The movie also fails to show Roberts fragile state in of mind as when he comes across Eugene Taffler during his lousetown experience. This part although included in the movie failed at its purpose to show Roberts fragile state of mind and his loss of innocence. It did not include the scene where Robert sees Eugene Tafflers different and dark personality and thus did not show his of anger and disappointment as he considered Eugene as role model and wanted to follow his footsteps. The movie did succeed in showing the effects of war over people and suffering it caused. It showed how the soldiers were treated and under what conditions they fought. Nevertheless, it failed to show how the wars affect their state of mind. The novel expressed this part every effectively and was very clear in showing what went through their (soldiers) mind and how they reacted when they faced the reality of War. The movie did not contain any reference this part of the novel, thus failed in its primary objective to show the reality of War and the suffering caused by it.

Based on concepts from expectancy theory (Vroom 1964, Lawler 1971) best practice HR will result in higher levels of quality, productivity and low rates of absenteeism and wastage (Guest 2000). The best practice approach suffers from a series of limitations. Firstly, when implementing best practice standards organizations run risk of introducing mutually prohibitive combinations like team working and compensation based on individual performance resulting in a deterioration of employee collaboration through overexaggerated competition (Delery 1998 in Redman and Wilkinson 2009). Secondly, high commitment management systems are generally a complex undertaking requiring large inputs of planning and top level management commitment. Thirdly, critics like Milkovich and Newman (2002) argue that best practice HR lacks direct linkages with organizational strategies and is minted by the belief that outstanding high performing human resources will influence strategy. By making HR policy precede corporate strategy an organization risks prescribing standardized sets of â€Å"one size fits all† best practice approaches which will not support the particular needs of employees and be detrimental to overall strategic objectives (Maloney and Morris 2005). Fourthly, discussions with regard to the appropriate cho ice of best practice measures resulting from an insufficient research methodology and theoretical definition exist (Marchington and Grugulis 2000 in Redman and Wilkinson 2009). 2.2 Best fit approach The best-fit model is considered as a variant from precedent models of Harvard, Michigan and York and is called â€Å"matching model† for HRM (Sparrow and Hiltrop 1994). It is based on developing HRM policies according to business strategy. Strategy involves planning future activities, performances objectives, and policies towards reaching the corporate aims. HRM strategy should be designed and applied to support the given corporate strategy (Lawler 1995). The â€Å"best-fit† approach questions the universality assumption of the best-practice perspective. It emphasizes contingency fit between HR activities and the organization’s stage of development, an organization’s internal structures and its external environment like clients, suppliers, competition and lab our markets (Redman and Wilkinson 2009). Wyoming Population Boom The population of a state is a seemingly simple number but one that has many complex and interesting implications. It can affect the economic, social and environmental success either short term or long term. In July 2006, Wyoming’s total resident population reached a record level of 515,004. This number may seem small when looking at the population of an entire state in comparison to other states, but for Wyoming, it really is the record number in the history of this state. The population growth shown between 2005 and 2006 was 6,206 persons. This is a 1.6 percent increase in one year! (State of Wyoming- Department of Administration and Information) There are many reasons that contribute to a change in population including the birth rates, death rates and migration. In order to understand the current population, we must first look at the history of Wyoming’s population. The population of Wyoming increased by more than 50 percent between 1970 and 1983, but then decreased by more than 10 percent from 1983 to 1990. According to the 2000 census, Wyoming’s population went up by 8.9 percent between 1990 and 2000. Those numbers would be 453,588 to 493,782. It is interesting to compare that in ten years from 1990 to 2000 the population increased by 8.9 percent, which is roughly .89 percent increase per year, and an increase of 1.6 percent from 2005 to 2006. If the population keeps expanding at a rate of 1.6, in ten years that will be a total population increase of 16 percent! The 8.9 percent increase from 1990 to 2000 had a major impact on the state’s economic and social structure. Imagine was a 16 percent increase would do to the state of Wyoming! (Population Change in Wyoming) Now that we have seen the population pattern written out in numbers we can begin to analyze the reasons for the changes. The first important reason would be the relationship between birth rates and death rates. This involves births into a population, and deaths from a population. These two factors come together to show the natural increase is the combined effects of births and deaths. The number of births in Wyoming has gone down throughout the 1990’s, from 6,974 (in 1990) to 6,254 (in 2000.) On the other hand, the death numbers have climbed during that same ten year period. In 1991 the lowest number of deaths was recorded at 3,152 and the highest level was up around 4,038 in 1999.

The Ups Delivery Information Acquisition Device (Diad Iv)

UPS revolutionized the package delivery business in 1991 when it developed and deployed the first Delivery Information Acquisition Device, known as the DIAD. More than a decade later, UPS continues its pioneering development efforts with the fourth generation of the DIAD – the DIAD IV. To ensure maximum flexibility in field transmission capabilities, DIAD IV includes multiple wireless connectivity options. Each DIAD IV features a built-in GPRS or CDMA radio, an acoustical modem to facilitate dial-up access if necessary, and 802. 1b wireless local area network connectivity to enable transmission in a UPS center. The DIAD IV also features a Bluetooth wireless personal area network and an infrared (IrDA) port to communicate with peripheral devices and customer PCs/printers. DIAD IV introduces a revolutionary new feature – Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) – to the handheld terminal market. UPS plans to use this technology to provide drivers with more detailed direc tions to pick-up and delivery points in order to improve customer service. The monochrome screen on previous DIADS has been replaced with a color screen that accommodates more information which can be displayed in an easier-to-read manner. The color screen also enables UPS to color-code messages transmitted to a driver's DIAD. Urgent customer pick-up messages, for example, can be color-coded to alert the driver. In addition, the DIAD IV contains 128 megabytes of memory – 20 times the capacity of the DIAD III. UPS will use this expanded capacity to provide new and improved customer services. Like its predecessors, the DIAD IV's battery lasts an entire work day. The DIAD IV sends delivery information to the UPS data repository as soon as the delivery information is entered. Drivers simply scan the package bar code, collect the receiver's signature electronically, type in the last name of the receiver and push a single key to complete the transaction and send the data. There is no need to activate a cell phone or return to the vehicle. Part of what makes the DIAD such a powerful tool is the system – ODS (On-Demand Services) – that enables communication with the driver. Every UPS driver automatically logs into the ODS system first thing in the morning. This allows dispatchers and center management to access the driver via his/her DIAD throughout the day by sending generalized text messages. Virtually all drivers start their day with a list of predefined customer pickup locations for that day. Thanks to ODS, the addition of a one-time pickup can be added to a driver's work list on-the-fly, enabling UPS to take best advantage of the geographic location of its entire fleet for servicing pickup requests. By using the DIAD, UPS eliminates the use of 89 million sheets of paper per year, the equivalent of 7,308 trees. Museum Of Modern Art George Seurat

Art AS communication 3 December 2013 Museum Paper On November 9th, 2013, St. Josephs College hosted a field trip into New York City. The purpose of this field trip was to transport us into the city, and have the students visit a major art museum. There were a few different choices, the students had, but most went straight to the Metropolitan Museum of Art because the admission to the museum was whatever you want to contribute. However, we took a different approach.My friend and I went straight to The Museum of Modern Art, also known as the MOMA. I looked briefly the night before at each museum to get a feel for what I wanted to see, and what I did not. Once I saw this artist was at the MOMA, that's when I knew I wanted to actually see it in person. The artist that I very much wanted to see was George Seurat. Prior to this class, I have never heard of this artist. I never knew who he was, or knew the style in which he painted. It was only a few classes before the trip that I truly lea rned to appreciate this artist.I have never seen an artist who has the patience and delicacy to place these dots on a canvas, sometimes smaller than a crumb, to create a work of art. George Seurat was a French Post-Impressionist painter who drew in a style called pointillism. Pointillism is â€Å"the theory or practice in art of applying small strokes or dots of color to a surface so that from a distance they blend together. † (Merriam- webster. com) This style of painting is consistent with his other works through this time period. The piece of art I chose for my paper is the â€Å"Port-en-Bessin, Entrance to he Harbor† by Seurat.This painting was made in France in 1888 and is roughly 21. 65 inches by 25. 59 inches. The painting is oil on canvas and describes a harbor in France. When I first saw this painting I didn't realize it was a piece by Seurat. It looked as if it was work done in a different style than pointillism. I chose this one because, in my opinion, this style of painting deserves the most respect out of any of the artist. In this painting you can see how each little dot is done in order to create one large image. The first thing I noticed in this painting was the defining line between the shore and the water.Seurat uses different shades of green and a very pale color to illustrate the effect of grass and sand. For some reason that part of the painting kept me looking for a little bit and following the shore line up the painting. Next my eyes brought me to the water and the floating dock towards the middle ground slightly to the left of the painting. Here you can see he used two complementary colors to really attract your eyes to that point. The almost wood color f the dock and the light blue water really reinforce each other and keep you looking there for a brief second.The water had me confused at first. You can see within the harbor itself, there are three larger dark blue circles. I thought they were deeper parts of the water an d Seurat was trying to create depth here, but I soon ruled that out. I later realized with the weather that is portrayed here, that those are clouds exiting the harbor and that there was a lot going on here. I believe this is where Seurat wanted his focal point to be. The very center of the painting shows the sharp angles of the sails against the dark shadow of the cloud meeting the water.It is not just the contrast that brings your eyes here, but it is the way the boats are positioned. As with the shore line mentioned earlier, the boats are creating this line in which your eyes Just follow. Seurat uses directional force here starting with the boat on the right and creating this sense of movement towards the boat to the left, leading out into the ocean. He uses the shapes of the sails, and the direction they re advancing, to lead your eyes out, to the background, into the ocean where the rest of the boats are.Actually going into the city to see the original work in person was import ant to me because you can only appreciate this style of art once you are in front of it. Looking up this picture online doesn't do it Justice because the colors are off and it looks strikingly different from the original. Also an important thing to note is you can really see the small and medium dots he used in this painting. When you zoom in online, the resolution is off and it gets blurry before you can see detail.Not to discredit any other artist, but I think this style of painting requires much more time and dedication to create the final image. Overall, I have enjoyed this trip, and the class for that matter, because it showed me there is more to art when you can break it down using the elements and principles and see what the painting is really about. Even if you're comparing percentile scores over a longer period of time, percentile scores will stay the same or only change minimally.
